The Business of Happiness

"It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busy-ness of life, to work harder and harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover it’s leaning against the wrong wall."

Steven Covey.

Taking time out of everyday life to retreat and reflect is not something we are encouraged to do in our lives, instead, we are conditioned from an early age to strive towards our potential and personal success, to make ourselves very busy, always be in a mode of doing and by doing bring about the success and happiness that we believe we want.

As we go through the stages of life we play out our story whole heartedly, each success celebrated comes and goes along with failure, trauma, loss and pain, in this process we learn and grow, we unknowingly exchange the energetic optimism of youth for age bestowing us with a certain wisdom, which can leave us feeling a little worn-torn, tired and maybe a little regretful.

We expect certain milestones in our life which don't always come to fruition, we at least expect a certain happiness, to become happier, to bask in the glory of all our hard-won work....

This happiness award unfortunately does not always get presented to everyone and it is not even a matter of league, intelligence or even wealth. What is not often disclosed is that if you never actually felt particularly happy in your life, it is unlikely to come through the acquiring of stuff, achievements and or milestones like - marriage, children, the perfect house, kitchen, bursting wardrobes, fancy cars or holidays in the sun! Leaving us scratching our heads feeling dazed, confused and wondering what happened to the elusive promise of happiness.

We all know that money and material wealth does not bring happiness but we still at some deep intrinsic level believe it does and we keep driving forward toward growth, growth to be better, and better than that.

Growth is inbuilt a wondrous human endeavour, how far we have come and how we have evolved there is no denying. This is not about turning back, retrieving a deluded fantasy of what never was, but instead of looking constantly beyond ourselves it is time we looked at the galaxy within and truly understood the intricacy of the self and that self as a bigger connected one.

Claim your time, cultivate gratitude for this life precious, short life given, contemplate the meaning of your own life, your relationships and the interactions of your daily routines, how you express yourself and how present you are to your feelings. How would you like to be remembered when you return to star dust?

We have the good fortune to gaze at the mystic of the moon and magic of the stars, we don't need to know all the answers but we can enjoy the questions.

Take time to be happy now, for this could be the best times of our lives.
